EAT

One of the best parts of exploring new places, or returning to places you love, is the food! These are a few places we make time for whenever we’re home.

SNACKS & SWEETS

Sugar Shack

Uniquely Richmond-style donuts with every topping you can imagine, and some you can’t. We like to buy a few and cut them into pieces so we get a chance to try as many as possible. Except the Bacon Maple. That’s too good to share.

Proper Pie Co.

They have all the pies you could imagine, both sweet and savory. Check Facebook for their daily menu.

Bev’s Homemade

Old-fashioned ice cream made right behind the store. It really can’t get any fresher. Our favorite flavors? Espresso Oreo and Butter Pecan.

Tropical Smoothie

Looking for something quick and healthy? Grab some Tropical Smoothie. The bride’s family owns the Westchester and Short Pump locations.

QUICK BITES & CHEAP EATS

First Watch

Formally known as The Egg & I, this family-friendly breakfast/brunch/lunch spot is the most convenient place to get a decent breakfast. Have something smothered in Hollandaise — it will make the world a better place.

River City Diner

For our German friends — this is an honest-to-goodness diner.

Q Barbecue

Why would you make your own barbecue? Because you move to Germany. Before becoming expats, we got our pulled pork from Q.

Sergio’s

Our neighborhood pizza joint! The bride used to ride her bike here for a slice.

Rico’s Grill

Our go-to Mexican restaurant. If you happen to be around on Monday, it’s Dollar Taco Night.

Boychik’s Deli

The closest thing to a New York deli that you will find outside the City.

NICER PLACES

Baker’s Crust

While they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, the Baker’s Crust is one of our favorite brunch spots.

Mosaic

Very fresh, local ingredients served at yet another great brunch/lunch place. We go specifically for the Fried Green Tomato BLT.

The Boathouse

The food here is good, but you really go for the view. The Sunday Park location is situated right on the Swift Creek Reservoir and Rockett’s Landing boasts a fantastic view of the James River, so you can enjoy your meal while looking at the water.

PLEASANTLY PRETENTIOUS

Edo’s Squid

This place thinks it’s so good that it doesn’t need a website — and they’re right. Food is excellent. Great for a date night if you don’t really feel like talking — it’s quite loud. Or eat like a local and order take-out.

Pescado’s

If you want something a little different, this might be the thing for you! Known for it’s Caribbean-style seafood, Pescado’s uses local, organic and wild caught ingredients whenever possible.
